Resources for New Muslims

Some of my favorite resources for those who are beginning their journey into Islam.

Books

New Muslim Field Guide

The New Muslim’s Field Guide is a must read post-shahada. This delightful tongue in cheek treatise not only helps the new Muslim get their bearings Islamically but also gives guidance on how to embrace Islam in a healthy balanced manner without losing one’s identity or going overboard in the initial new convert zeal.

Faith First

Faith First: A Guide to Awakening Iman is a comprehensive book for awakening and refining faith. This book is a great resource for any phase of the journey, as it will meet you where you are and invite you into deeper guidance.

Beginner Quran

New Muslim Academy Logo

New Muslim Academy offers free beginner Quran classes with highly qualified teachers. In the short series you will be guided step by step in learning a couple short surahs within a small group. NMA was and continues to be one of my favorite organizations for convert care and they were a big part of the beginning stages of my Quran journey.

Qaida Nooraniyah

Qaida Nooraniyah is a first and very important step for most of us in our path to learning to read and recite Quran. Don’t fall into the trap of trying to read from transliteration as it will become a crutch and a hindrance.

There are many resources to help you to learn your alef ba tas, but I particularly enjoy this Youtube series. I especially like the depth of attention this teacher puts into explaining how to properly pronounce each letter.

Online Learning

Rayyan Institute

Rayyan Institute offers a variety of online lessons as well as carefully curated learning tracks as well as live learning events. The care and consideration put not only into the quality but also the delivery of the lessons impresses me as much today as it did as a fresh convert.

Faith Essentials

Faith Essentials from Al Maghrib brings the standard of excellence this longstanding institution is known for but packaged in a convenient online learning portal. I’ve found their learning portal to be convenient and easy to use and a great place to view in depth lecture series from some of the biggest and most familiar faces in Islam.
